To mark both the 25th anniversary of Angela Carter’s death and the 40th anniversary of her visit to Portugal, we are presenting the exhibition Designing Perspectives. Challenging Boundaries as one of the central moments within the academic and cultural meeting Receiving | Perceiving Angela Carter.

Besides a display of copies of Carter’s texts and narrative, and texts on her work, we are mainly presenting readings of her collection The Bloody Chamber (1979) by the students of Multimedia Design (Interaction Design II) from the University of Beira Interior, by the students of the Masters in Innovation in Culinary Arts (Food Design) from the Estoril Higher Institute for Hotel and Tourism Studies, and by the students of Design (Design IV) from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon. The literary text is thus (re) interpreted by design and gastronomy, illustrating the creative dimension of reading, reflecting Carter’s words: ‘Reading a book is like re-writing it for yourself. And I think all fiction should be open-ended. You bring to a novel, anything you read. All your experience of the world. You bring your history and you read it in your own terms’ (1985).

Venue: Gallery of the Library of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon

Exhibition Schedule:
Opening – 23rd May
Monday – Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Saturday: 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

And I think all fiction should be open-ended. You bring to a novel, anything you read. All your experience of the world. You bring your history and you read it in your own terms’ (1985).
